Lumber & Timbers
Board footage formula:
bf =
thickness" x width" x length' /
12
(thickness
and width in inches, length in
feet)
Calculate
weight for SYP:
Rough
green or treated = 5.0# x bf
Rough or S1S1E full dry =
3.5# x bf
S4S
green or treated timbers or planks
= 4.0# x
bf
S4S
green or treated dimension = 3.2# x bf
S4S
dry 25% m.c. timbers or planks
= 2.8# x
bf
S4S
dry 19% m.c. dimension = 2.2# x bf
Dimension
is lumber 2" or less in thickness
Planks
are 3" or 4" in thickness
Timbers
are 5" x 5" or larger
Deduct
.2# per board foot if T&G
Examples: One
48,000# load of rough green lumber will be approximately 9,600bf. A load of
rough dry lumber will be approximately 13,700bf. Other factors that can effect the
weight of lumber is amount of oversize ( rough cut), density, moisture content, and
specie.
Poles & Pilings
An average truck can carry roughly
750 cubic feet (cf) of poles or pilings. A cubic foot of saturated
(treated or green) wood weighs approximately 60#s. It's advisable to figure
63# per
cubic foot because some of the piles may be oversized and will cause the total
weight to
be higher than calculated. Most
trucks with bolsters can carry 47,000#s, so that's anywhere
from 746 to 783 cubes depending on the amount of oversize.
